Publications, recordings and other outputs
An overview of what I have written and published (as sociologist) or recorded and released (as musician). Simply, all public "outputs" of my work. When technically feasible and legally possible, I will add full texts and, in respective parts of the musical section of this web, musical samples in mp3.
KONOPÁSEK, Z. (2024 - in press): Sbohem příteli, naše cesty se rozešly: O interpretativní analýze, počítačích a programu ATLAS.ti [Farewell, my friend, our paths have parted: On interpretive analysis, computers, and the ATLAS.ti software]. Biograf, (78), Available at http://www.biograf.org/

I discuss current trends in the use of computers in qualitative data analysis, especially the introduction of artificial intelligence (AI). The main attention is focused on the ATLAS.ti program. In the race to see which of the CAQDAS programs will offer the better use of AI, methodologically founded features of these programs are being subtly but perhaps irreversibly displaced by technically focused innovations that have so far yielded only very uncertain results. An example is the quotation filter in ATLAS.ti based on whether they are commented, which has recently disappeared from the ATLAS.ti program. The fundamental importance of this filtering is explained. To provide a broader context of my argument, I show the analytical procedure as a set of specific reading/writing practices and criticize the excessive emphasis on coding in qualitative analysis.

NOČNÍ PTÁK (2024): Prach [Dust]. Polí5

In 2023, Noční pták [Nightbird] flapped its wings again at summer sessions in Albeř. During this flap of the wing, public performance took place on August 5, (see video created by Kryštof Zika

) and, two days later, a non-public recording session was organized, with the ambition to elaborate on the themes and ideas brought about on the preceding fully improvised concert. The result is the album PRACH / DUST.
ZDENĚK KONOPÁSEK & JAN ŠTOLBA (2024): Protoritual. Polí5
::::
Jan Štolba and Zdeněk Konopásek first played together in Dr. Konopný's Quartet, lead by the actor, performer and the "Last Bohemian" Radomil Uhlíř. Some years later they met at Radomil's funeral, in 2019, and they promised each other to get together again soon. But the meeting didn't take place until 2023. Then, one afternoon in May, they finally gathered in a home studio outside of Prague and started to improvise without any preparation. The session was recorded and this album contains almost everything put down on tape during that musical afternoon.

The leaflets of the PLA are not an Anthropocene icon, but they tell us about this phenomenon. They show that we are not only living in a time of destruction of nature, landscapes and cultural monuments, but also of unprecedented protection measures. It is not just a matter of action and reaction. It is not just the number of protected specimens and sites that is expanding, but also the types of things that are being protected. At the same time, the question of what we are actually protecting and from whom is becoming more urgent. The Anthropocene is not only the physical state of the contemporary world, but also the way we talk about it. Its characteristics include both the fact that we increasingly think of it in general terms, in terms of protection and regulation, and what specifically is the focus of this protection.

I discuss a new program suitable for qualitative researchers that automatically transcribes recorded speech into text. It is based on the Whisper transcription model from OpenAI. Resulting transcriptions sensitively balance accuracy and readability, and surpass the work of average hired human transcribers in quality. A particular advantage for qualitative research is that the program does not send the data to remote servers for processing; everything happens on the local computer.

PRACH, J. / KONOPÁSEK, Z. / ŘÍHA, C. (2023): Jak stavět v krajině: Návrh webové aplikace na podporu usměrňování stavební činnosti v CHKO [Constructing in landscape: Proposal of a web application to support the regulation of construction activities in the PLA]. Ochrana přírody, 78 (6): 26-29. Available at (in Czech): https://www.casopis.ochranaprirody.cz/

Regulation of construction in protected areas with the aim of preserving the landscape character is an important agenda of nature protection authorities. The agenda causes a number of tensions between the citizen-builder and the authority. In the article, we present the results of the TAČR project, introduced two years ago. One of the outputs of the project is a web application, which is to reflect, in a context-sensitive manner and in an accessible form, the local qualities of the landscape character and issuing principles of protection. Its data are based on Preventive Landscape Evaluation Studies, which are elaborated and regularly updated for individual PLAs. The web interface allows to generate a printable document tailored to users needs. The application should contribute to a better articulated approach to the regulation - an approach that is differentiated and understandable for all participants.
