In 399 BC, Socrates faced accusations of undermining trust in social institutions. At that time, Athenian democracy felt weakened. Threats and causes of decay were sought. The prosecutors appeared before the jury claiming they had found the culprit... And so Athens sentenced the philosopher to death. His student Plato was in the audience at the time. He described precisely how his fellow citizens mistook criticism for enmity.
