John French is an excellent, inventive musician. A drummer. And, today, also vocalist. He used to play with Captain Beefheart. His drumming can be heard, among others, on the most innovative records such as Trout mask replica or Lick my decals off, baby. His role in the Magic Band has always been prominent, reaching far beyond playing drum kit. His effort was crucial in translating Beefheart's musical ideas into parts playable by the band. And also after Captain withdraw from music to create his paintings and get charmingly old, fragile man, French was an active beefheartian. Taking care of editing archival material, writing sleevenotes, playing solo drum parts from the old repertoire and also, relatively recently, reviving the Beefheart's Magic Band for some years. Now, he is coming with a new record and playing with a band, consisting of nothing but prominent former Magic Band players.
